Childbirth Educators

Childbirth educators offer classes that provide information to expectant parents about the stages of labor and delivery, pain management and relaxation techniques, basic infant care, and in many cases, typical interventions and procedures in the hospital.  Independent childbirth educators are generally not affiliated with a hospital and the information they provide generally does not center on a particular hospital’s policies and recommendations.  Many offer a curriculum based on a certain philosophy or approach (See Birth Links).

It is important to ask a potential childbirth educator questions before enrolling in a
course to ensure a good match between your needs and expectations and their approach
and philosophy.  See Questions to Ask Providers for a comprehensive list.

“La smala” means “the family”.  Because I value the important transition of birth for families and I want to insure services to all birthing families who wish to receive them, I offer barter and sliding scale.  I have experienced birth as a mother, an interpreter, and as a doula, in varying contexts, from hospital to home birth.  I value the birth process and the following weeks as an empowering moment for families, and believe in offering the support desired to make this important transition a wonderful journey.
