Birth Doulas

A birth doula’s role is to nurture the birthing individual (and partner/supports). A doula offers guidance, physical and emotional support, and information to help couples make informed choices before, during, and after the birth.  The value of the continuous support of a nurturing and knowledgeable companion during this most sacred time cannot be underestimated. Doulas utilize techniques and comfort measures which ease labor pains and allow the birthing individual to be present with their labor in a positive way. Doulas are knowledgable in the terminology surrounding childbirth, as well as common medical interventions, so they can assist their clients in navigating through a sometimes confusing and overwhelming system.

Before, after, and during the birth, doulas educate the birthing individuals (and partners/supports) and help them gather the information they need to make informed choices for themselves and their birth. Doulas remain with their clients throughout the entire labor, birth, and immediate postpartum time. Perhaps most importantly, doulas provide empathic, steadfast, non-judgmental emotional support and reassurance.

La Smala Birth Service
placenta encapsulation specialist

“La smala” means “the family”.  Because I value the important transition of birth for families and I want to insure services to all birthing families who wish to receive them, I offer barter and sliding scale.  I have experienced birth as a mother, an interpreter, and as a doula, in varying contexts, from hospital to home birth.  I value the birth process and the following weeks as an empowering moment for families, and believe in offering the support desired to make this important transition a wonderful journey.
